Lenovo Laptop Not Turning On or Black Screen? Step-by-Step Checks
By Lenovo Service Center Indore · · 6 min read

When a Lenovo laptop does not start, there is usually a pattern behind it. Is it completely dead, or does it power on and show nothing? Does a light blink? Answering these questions narrows down the fault quickly, and often reveals a fix you can try yourself first.
Dead, or just no display?
Press the power button and watch. If the fan spins or the keyboard lights come on but the screen stays black, the laptop is starting and the issue is more likely the display, memory or graphics. Shine a torch at the screen at an angle to see if there is a very faint image, and connect an external monitor over HDMI. If there is no sign of life at all, including the charging light, the issue is in the power path.
Basic checks
- Try another socket and a known good charger, and look at whether the charger light or the laptop's charging light comes on.
- Remove everything plugged into the laptop: USB drives, SD cards, docks and printers.
- Do a power reset by unplugging, removing a removable battery, and holding the power button for about ten seconds.
- Try the Novo button, the small button or pinhole on many IdeaPad, Yoga and Legion models. It opens a menu with options such as BIOS setup and system recovery, which also confirms the laptop can power up.
- Leave the laptop on the charger for around 20 minutes. A fully drained battery can take time to respond.
Reseating the memory
If you are comfortable opening the back cover, switching off and unplugging, then removing and reseating the RAM can fix a laptop that powers on but does not display. Many thin IdeaPad and ThinkPad models have soldered memory or panels that are hard to open, so if you are unsure, leave this to a technician. Forcing a cover can break clips and cables.
Common causes
- Faulty adapter or damaged cable
- Worn or failed battery
- Damaged DC charging port
- RAM or display connection problems
- Corrupted BIOS after an interrupted update or power cut
- Power circuit faults or a short on the motherboard
- Liquid damage
If liquid was spilled
Switch the laptop off, unplug it and do not try to start it again to test. Do not use a hair dryer. Sweet drinks corrode contacts quickly, so the sooner it is cleaned, the better the chance of a small repair rather than a large one.
Can the files be saved?
In many cases yes, because the storage drive is separate from the parts that usually fail. If your files matter more than the laptop, say so before work starts so the repair is planned around saving the data.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Novo button on a Lenovo laptop?
It is a small button or pinhole on many IdeaPad, Yoga and Legion models that opens a menu for BIOS setup, boot options and system recovery, even when Windows is not starting.
Does a black screen always mean a broken screen?
No. It can also be caused by memory, graphics, a loose display cable or a motherboard fault. An external monitor test helps tell them apart.
