Lenovo Keyboard or Touchpad Not Working? Fixes and What to Do After a Spill
By Lenovo Service Center Indore · · 5 min read

A keyboard that skips letters or a touchpad that goes dead makes a laptop frustrating to use. The cause may be a harmless setting or a damaged part. The fastest way to tell the difference is to test outside Windows, and then follow the right fix.
Software or hardware?
Use the Novo button or the startup menu on your Lenovo to enter BIOS setup, where the keyboard and touchpad work without Windows. If the keyboard navigates the menu normally but fails inside Windows, the problem is a driver or setting. If it fails in both places, a hardware fault is likely.
Keyboard fixes
- Restart the laptop and install pending Windows updates.
- Check that Filter Keys and Sticky Keys are off in Windows accessibility settings.
- Press Fn + Esc on models that have an Fn Lock, since it changes how the top row behaves.
- In Device Manager, uninstall the keyboard device and restart so Windows reinstalls it.
- Connect a USB keyboard. If that works, the built-in keyboard alone is faulty.
- Gently brush debris from between the keys. Never pour liquid on the keyboard.
Touchpad fixes
- Look for a touchpad key on the function row, or the Fn combination for your model, and press it to switch the touchpad back on.
- Open Settings, then Bluetooth and devices, then Touchpad, and check that it is enabled.
- Disconnect any external mouse, as some settings disable the touchpad when one is attached.
- Reinstall the touchpad driver from Lenovo Vantage or Lenovo's support site and restart.
- On ThinkPad models, remember that the TrackPoint is a separate input and can be tested on its own.
Signs of hardware damage
If the base looks bulged or the touchpad is pushed up, stop using the laptop and have the battery inspected.
- Whole rows of keys stop at once, often a keyboard cable or membrane fault
- Keys or touchpad work only when you press hard on the palm rest
- The touchpad is lifted or the click feels stuck, which can be caused by a swelling battery beneath
- Sticky or unresponsive keys after a drink was spilled
After a liquid spill
Switch off immediately, unplug the charger and turn the laptop so liquid can drain out. Do not use a hair dryer and do not test whether it still works. Bring it in quickly, because sugary drinks such as tea and cold drinks corrode contacts within days, and early cleaning can prevent a much larger repair.
Repair options
- Full keyboard replacement, including backlit and region-specific layouts where available
- Touchpad and ribbon cable replacement
- Cleaning corroded areas after a spill and checking nearby components
- Driver and BIOS updates where the problem is software-based

Frequently asked questions
Can a single key be fixed?
A loose keycap can sometimes be refitted. If the key mechanism or the keyboard membrane is damaged, replacing the keyboard is usually the reliable fix.
My Lenovo got wet. Should I turn it on to check?
No. Switch it off, unplug it and bring it in as soon as possible. Powering on a wet laptop can turn a small repair into a major one.
